Weekend Scenes

Thomas is working away a lot at the moment, so what time we do have together we are trying to make the most of. And it's been brilliant, actually, at shaking us out of our weekend rut - our tendency to mooch around the house doing jobs that yes, need doing, but no, aren't terribly exciting or relaxing.

This weekend, after a Saturday spent working (him) and sewing and hanging out with the cat (me), we had a rare Sunday together.

Homemade soup for lunch.

A walk into town, discussing various job opportunities for Thomas (his contract runs out in March, because academia sucks for finding permanent employment, so he's back on the job application treadmill).

A visit to the 13th Century Newarke Gateway, open rarely as part of Leicester Council's Heritage Sundays, where I was terrified of the stone spiral staircase but much taken with the view from the mullioned windows.
A visit to the Guildhall Christmas market, where we picked up some lovely stocking fillers and admired the gorgeous Christmas tree in their courtyard (and difficult to wrap our heads around the idea that in eight months we'll be drinking post-wedding Prosecco in that same courtyard!).

A mooch around the shops in the city centre, before we got sick of the Black Friday-on-Sunday crowds and walked up the hill out of the city to the Lansdowne, for restorative cider and a vegan roast dinner for Thomas and a decidedly un-vegan Brie and bacon melt for me.

It was one of the nicest Sundays we've had in ages, and my not-quite-new-years-yet-resolution is to have many more the same. After all, those boring jobs at home can wait, surely?

  1. Jonny is often super busy and away a lot with work/band/Duke of Edinburgh expedition commitments so I can completely get on board with how lovely it is to spend some quality time together just pleasing yourselves. This weekend is our first since the end of September just the two of us not having to entertain anybody else and I am beyond excited about it!

    1. The first since SEPTEMBER?!! Wow, that's tough for sure. I do enjoy having weekends to myself sometimes, to meet up with friends or just potter and get lots of crafting done, but it's also lovely to have some time together.

  4. That sounds like a great weekend, and it's especially nice that you are already starting to gear up for Christmas. I hope you manage to get a few more days like this lined up. I need to do this with R, too, as he'll be working loads until Christmas is over. This post is a good reminder.

  5. I love a blue and silver tree! Someday I will have a house, with both my everything but the kitchen sink tree, and then, a themed tree, all classy like ;-) I still have to visit our Christmas market...hopefully it's slightly better than it was last year, it might just make me want to go to Edinburgh! Best of Luck to Thomas! :-)

    1. Considering I love Christmas in quite (ahem, very) a childlike way, I am very strict about my Christmas decorations being themed and classy. My colleague has a 6 year old, and she's given him his own tree in his room so that his 'lovely' homemade decorations are away from her tree, which is totally something I would do!

  6. This sounds like a great day, definitely a day well spent. The boring home jobs can definitely wait! Last Sunday Andy was working and I spent the afternoon and early evening with friends, jumping on a trampoline in the dark and sock fighting - which was much better than my plan of work work, and housework!

  7. I like a good mooch around on the weekend. We've been swamped with doing things in the house lately, but we've been trying to at least get out for a walk on the weekend to break it all up. I usually plan odd jobs and errands that require leaving the house and just try to get the indoor ones done whilst I'm at home during the week, that way we get to make the most of the weekends.

I do like your Christmas tree!

  8. I often wonder about when life got so busy and so adult that I feel guilty when I do nothing at the week end. Sounds like you had a great week end.
