Eat: Oscar & Rosie's Pizza

Oscar & Rosie's has long been one of my favourite dinner destinations in Nottingham, so I was excited to discover they were opening a location in Leicester. So excited, in fact, that Thomas and I visited within 24 hours of them opening their doors last Friday.

Why all the excitement over pizza? I hear you ask. Well, although Oscar & Rosie's isn't the first independent serving decent pizza to open in Leicester, it is the first to offer vegan cheese and a huge range of vegan meats. It makes such a huge difference to eating out together when neither Thomas nor I have to compromise; when he can have great vegan food and I, well, don't have to have vegan food!

The Leicester venue is smaller than their Nottingham branch, but offers the same mid-century-cum-junk shop style of shared seating along long wooden tables, and the same extensive menu of pizzas and both soft drinks and beer from small producers (although, at the time of our visit, no cider yet - unfortunately for me). From a menu boasting options as diverse as the beetroot, goat's cheese, & pesto Frenchman, to the Hamster (ham hock, mushrooms and ricotta), it felt a bit lazy to go for the Margherita, but with top-notch ingredients it was anything but boring.

Like all the best indie businesses, there's a slightly ramshackle feel to Oscar & Rosie's which is entirely its appeal; there's no slick corporate marketing needed when the pizza's as good as this. If you're local to Leicester - or even if you're not - I can heartily recommend you paying them a visit at Market Place, just off Hotel Street.

Note: this is not a sponsored post and  - more's the pity - I didn't get free pizza for writing about Oscar & Rosie's. I just really love the place!

  1. That pizza looks soooo good! It's my favourite food :) I've only ever been to Leicester by night (used to occasionally go out with a friend there 11/12 years ago, to a club (or night) I think was called Retribution) and I've not been to Nottingham for a long time either but Oscar and Rosie's is definitely a place I'll look out for next time I do go to either place!

    1. Ah Retribution, I used to go there! It was run by a guy I'd worked alongside at a previous rock club, always a good night out. And yep definitely recommend you take a look next time you're in Notts (or Leicester)

  2. That pizza looks delicious! Now I really want pizza...I've not been to Nottingham or Leicester, but shall definitely try to stop by if I'm ever there.

I'm currently very excited as one of my favorite burger shops has just opened a branch in Worcester (where I work). I can't wait to go for lunch! Isn't it lovely when delicious restaurants get a chance to grow?

    1. I love it that smaller places like Leicester and Worcester are starting to get some really great places - it especially makes a difference for us that there are now so many vegan options around the UK, rather than just being in the biggest cities.

  3. Omg, that beetroot goats cheese thing sounds amazing! Maybe they'll come to Newcastle next...

  4. Sounds great! I'm not a huge pizza fan but I do enjoy it when I have a proper one! Glad it's somewhere great for you AND Thomas! (I forgot- do you eat some meat when you can?)x

    1. To be honest I was never the biggest meat eater before I met Thomas and although I do still eat it, it's only rarely. Fish I miss more and do have relatively frequently - maybe once a fortnight.

This. I am planning on weekend in Nottingham soon and trying to decide how to narrow down food options when there's so much potential vegan choices that aren't focused on 'clean' or 'raw' eating...

    1. Nottingham is SO freaking good for vegan food! Oscar & Rosies for sure, and we also really like The Angel pub & microbrewery, which has both a vegan and an omni menu that run alongside (e.g. fish & chips and tofu & chips/pie & mash and vegan pie & mash), which is nice if your group has both omni and veggie/vegan members.

    2. I used to live in Nottingham but have rarely returned since leaving many years ago. Most of the vegan menu eateries I've heard about didn't exist when I was there, (plus my dietary decisions were somewhat less veg-inclined) so I'm excited to visit it in a new light.

  6. Yey for places with good vegan AND omni options! Especially when those options are pizza!
